Philosopher of Earth: Huang Zhengdao
Huang Zhengdao is an internationally acclaimed Taiwanese ceramicist and a member of the UNESCO International Society of Ceramics. His creative career began in the 1990s, and he has since dedicated himself to the creation and promotion of pottery, bringing his legacy and artistic spirit to the world. Huang Zhengdao has been invited as a guest artist at universities, art centers, and museums in over 30 countries, including the UK, the US, France, and China. His works have received international acclaim and are included in the collections of renowned museums, including the Gardner Museum of Ceramics in Canada and the Pompeii Museum of Ceramics in the United States.
A Teapot is Not Just One Shape: Creative Concepts and Style
Hwang Cheng-dao's ceramics blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics and are renowned for their unique metallic texture. Representative works include "sacred" teapots and clock-shaped teapots. He believes that "a teapot is not just one shape," meaning that his work should not be defined by a single form but rather embrace a variety of possibilities and emotions.
He views tea drinking as a "belief in the art of living," not simply a lifestyle, and this profound understanding of tea culture is reflected in his work. Hwang Cheng-dao has shared three philosophies in teapot making: In times of adversity, he upholds Confucianism; in times of success, he embraces Buddhism; and in the pursuit of neither gain nor loss, he adheres to the Taoist principle of maintaining a balance between gain and loss. This fusion of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist wisdom imbues his works with not only exquisite technique but also profound humanistic meaning.
Cross-Strait Exchange and Cultural Promotion
Besides his personal work, Huang Zhengdao is also dedicated to promoting cross-strait ceramic cultural exchange, having participated in the planning of numerous international ceramic exhibitions, such as the 2006 Shanghai Nine-Nation Teapot Masters Exhibition. He has emphasized the originality of contemporary Taiwanese ceramics and encouraged creators to constantly innovate. This commitment to artistic originality is the key to his continued success on the international stage.
Huang Zhengdao is not only a skilled ceramicist but also a profound philosopher. Through his work with clay, he integrates the art of tea, the philosophy of life, and cultural exchange, creating unique works of art.
